ABSTRACT

Several methods were applied in the past to protect the surfaces of ships from corrosion and decay, and their underwater parts from fouling. Among these, materials that are called marine paints and coatings have great importance. The Ottoman State started to realize its inadequacy in maritime in 18th Century. It was necessary to follow the developments in Europe to compete with the Western World in shipping. Modern ships were used for this purpose. After some time, the roughness that occurred in the outer layers of the ships in time affected even the speed of ships. Paint coatings were considered to extend the life of ships and not to disrupt their appearances. Painting Guides were published for seafarers to make ships look well and to maintain them. In the present study, ship paint coating materials at the end of 19th century, and the studies conducted on the effects of paints on ship resistance in Ottoman State were discussed.
