ABSTRACT

In this study, it is aimed to investigate the occupational accidents and risk factors on the Turkish flagged ships. For this purpose, the data on 234 cases of occupational accident occurred on the Turkish flagged ships between 06.10.2011 and 04.02.2014 registered in the database of Turkish Social Security Institution (SGK) were obtained, classified and analyzed with SPSS 21 software. As a result of the analysis, it was found that at least 44% of the 234 occupatlional accidents were occurred in the deck or cargo spaces of the ships, top two activities mostly done by victims at the time of accidents were 'walking / climbing or going down stairs / entering and leaving the doors' and ‘maintenance & repair of machinery parts in engine room', top two events that mostly caused injury of victims were ‘slip - stumble - fall at the same level or from high’ and ‘loss of control (full or partial); compression, crushing, cutting or needle of a body or a limb by one or more objects’, most of the victims were Deck and Engine Ratings, 30-49 years old, married and educated at the level of high school and lower, and 67.1% of 234 occupational accident cases was resulted in "incapacity for work", 61.1% were resulted in "workday loss" and 2,6% was resulted in death of victims.
