ABSTRACT
Around 90% of global trade is carried through the international shipping industry. This rate is the most important indication that the maritime sector has an important share in the world trade. With the increase in trade volume, new ships will be included in the system, more fuel will be consumed and more emissions will be released. For this reason, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) draws attention to the energy efficiency activities on the ships in order to reduce their adverse effects, identifying the energy saving potentials and encourages the sector in this regard.
In this study, the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy systems and the use of alternative energy sources such as shore-side power application on the ships have been examined to reduce marine fuel consumption and minimize exhaust gas emissions. Current informations about the use of alternative energy systems in the ship technology have been given. Moreover, it is aimed to contribute to the future predictions of the maritime sector representatives by mentioning the new generation ship designs and projects.
