ABSTRACT

In most industrial sectors, to analyse potential failure modes of systems and classify the failures according to possibilities and similarities, Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEA) is utilized. In general, Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) is employed to manage and mitigate design risks, which cause failures and hazards in a system (or product).

In this study, DFMEA is applied to fire, fuel and bilge systems design which have potential risks in yacht construction. The risk assessment for these systems among all yacht systems is the common decision of a group of experts consisted of surveyors, and people experienced for years in sector. To apply DFMEA during design level of a yacht helps to eliminate potential failures from a system with minimum source and effort and reduces time and the cost.
